I use Reaper... sorta commercial... nag free reminder... that reminds me... gotta pay for it this year... not so simple learning curve....

I use this freeware as well for less complex things like sample editing and normalizing/conversion.

Audacity works as well... used it briefly a while back:

For effects and processing I use just about all of these plugins (instruments too):;st=adv&soft[]=e&type[]=0&f[]=0&f[]=au&f[]=dx&f[]=ladspa&f[]=rtas&f[]=vst&win=1&free=1&sf=0&receptor=&de=0&sort=3&rpp=100

There are some crappy ones in there so happy hunting for the good stuff...
